Big Tech Failure! Amazon Shuts Down Checkout by Palm Scans Because Not Enough People Use It

by Brian Shilhavy
Health Impact News

Chalk up a victory for the American consumer market! As I have been encouraging Health Impact News readers for years now, if you want to fight back against Big Tech, just don’t use or purchase their products!

For years Big Tech was so rich in capital that it seemed that they could roll out any product or service they wanted to, whether it was popular in the consumer market or not.

But the tide is changing now, as these Big Tech companies compete, and collaborate, with each other to invest $trillions in AI development for the future, and are finally beginning to run out of cash.

Many are even now taking on debt to finance huge data centers which is their bottleneck at present with moving forward to digitize everything and put people into a digital “control grid,” a term I have to give credit to Catherine Austin Fitts [1] for, since I believe she is the one who has popularized this term “control grid”, if not coined it.

It has been widely reported this week that Amazon.com is shutting down its biometric Palm Scan checkout system, which has been used in Whole Foods stores, major league sporting events and other entertainment venues, since 2020.

Not enough consumers are using it to justify its cost anymore, and many groups have actually come out in recent times opposing it.

You know those little screens at Whole Foods checkouts where you can pay by just scanning your palm, like tech from science fiction or a spy movie?

The service is called Amazon One. And it’s going away.

According to tech news site GeekWire, Amazon, the online retail juggernaut that owns Whole Foods Market, will remove Amazon One palm readers from all Whole Foods locations by June 3, per a support page at amazonone.aws.com.

In response to limited customer adoption, we’re discontinuing Amazon One, our authentication service for facility access and payment,” an Amazon spokesperson told GeekWire.

“All customer data associated with Amazon One will be securely deleted after the service ends.”

Amazon One palm readers debuted in 2020. According to Grocery Dive, they were first introduced at a couple Seattle locations of Amazon Go, before rolling out to hundreds of Whole Foods locations, and eventually other Amazon properties including Panera Bread chain restaurants

Amazon One palm readers have also been used in sports stadiums and arenas, including those hosting some NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL teams.

In September 2021, concert promoter AEG announced plans to use Amazon One tech at iconic Colorado venue Reds Rocks Amphitheatre for ticketless entry.

But those plans were later scrapped, after protests from hundreds of musicians, including Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello.

Spearheaded by advocacy group Fight for the Future, the anti-Amazon One ticketless entry campaign claimed,

the spread of biometric surveillance tools like palm scans and facial recognition [transforms venues] into hotspots for ICE raids, false arrests, police harassment, and stolen identities.”

This comes at the same time that Amazon.com announced that they are laying off another 16,000 white collar jobs [3], in order to compete in AI spending.

In December of 2022, Amazon.com rolled out their new “Just Walk Out” checkouts in two test Whole Foods stores, that featured this palm scanning system at checkout, as well as an intricate network of Wifi cameras throughout that store that tracked the customer’s every movement and recorded what they put into their shopping carts, so that the customer could shop and check out in these Whole Food stores with no human interaction.

It was touted as “the wave of the future” in retail grocery, and I published an article about it that month:

Amazon’s Whole Foods Moves Closer to the Satanic Merchant Model of Marking and Tracking Every Customer [4]

Less than 6 months later, Whole Foods abandoned the system because it was too costly, and it just simply did not work, even with a team in India behind the scenes trying to get the system to work “without human intervention”.

How Amazon’s Big Bet on ‘Just Walk Out’ Stumbled

Amazon’s “Just Walk Out” system was supposed to be the futuristic centerpiece of its push into physical retail. But as Amazon pulls back from opening its own physical stores, the team behind the technology has struggled to control costs and pitch the system to other big retailers.

Excerpts:

In 2020, Amazon went on a blitz offering up the grab-and-go cashierless technology behind its Amazon Go convenience stores to large retailers around the world.

That included offering up the Just Walk Out technology to Woolworths, the largest retailer by revenue in Australia, according to a person with knowledge of the talks. And executives at department store chain Kohl’s weighed the pros and cons of installing Just Walk Out, a person with knowledge of the discussions said.

But few deals with big retail chains have materialized in the years since, and Amazon has yet to deploy the tech in a large store that it doesn’t own itself.

“Amazon went out of their way to make it clear to the entire retail industry that Just Walk Out was available to them,” said Brittain Ladd, a consultant and former Amazon executive.

Installing Just Walk Out technology at stores operated by big retail chains would differ from previously reported discussions that Amazon had with Walmart and Target in 2020 about collaborating on networking technology for retailers offered through an open source group.

Some of the retailers Amazon approached about Just Walk Out were concerned about whether the shoppers would embrace the technology and if it made financial sense, the people said.

While retailers have embraced self-scanning checkout systems, Just Walk Out is more complicated because it uses cameras and sensors to track what customers take from stores. Existing stores have to be retrofitted, which can take them out of commission for months, and once Just Walk Out is up and running staffers need to make sure the stores shelves are kept arranged so the scanning technology can work.

Amazon currently uses the technology in more than 20 Amazon Go stores, more than 40 Fresh grocery stores and two Whole Foods stores, a company spokesperson said.

For its part, Amazon still relies on a significant amount of human staffing to power Just Walk Out behind the scenes, according to a person who has worked on the technology.

Amazon had more than 1,000 people in India working on Just Walk Out as of mid-2022 whose jobs included manually reviewing transactions and labeling images from videos to train Just Walk Out’s machine learning model, the person said.

The reliance on backup humans explains in part why it can take hours for customers to receive receipts after walking out of a store, the person said.

Still, Amazon kept the palm scanners and “Just Walk Out” technology in their “Amazon Fresh” and their “Amazon Go” mini grocery stores, until last week, when it was announced that Amazon was closing those stores too.

I guess grocery stores with no human interaction where everything they do is scanned and recorded, is just not what American consumers want.

Amazon’s Fresh Dream Expires

It’s a good thing Jeff Bezos started Amazon as an internet-based retailer. He might never have made it as a traditional shopkeeper!

Amazon on Tuesday said it would shutter its chain of Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go grocery stores, closing a chapter in its fitful efforts to expand in physical stores. Amazon still owns the Whole Foods chain it bought in 2017, which the company says it will be expanding.

But for now, it seems Amazon is focusing most of its grocery ambitions online, such as its new fast-delivery service, Amazon Now. (Full article [6].)

This defeats Amazon’s goals to put every customer into their “digital control grid”, and they were defeated by YOU, the consumer, because you were unwilling to use and purchase their products.

Congratulations American consumers! We’re finally beginning to make the right choices with our time and money, and fighting back against Big Tech and their digital (and physical [7]) prisons they are building.

But the battle is just getting started, and it will take ALL OF US to resist this Beast system that controls the Global Financial system.

Do not fear them. They are NOT invincible. The more we abandon “Right vs. Left” political and religious ideology and focus on the common threat to ALL OF US, the better chance we have to defeat Satan and his minions in the physical realm.

Your neighbor who is on the opposite side of your religious and political preferences is NOT your enemy, and Jesus commanded us to love everyone as he does.

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.

Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. (Ephesians 6:10-12)

Note to Readers: I research and cover many major media events each day, and usually publish links and information throughout the day on our Telegram channel [8]. I have been posting many things about the recent Jeffrey Epstein file dump, for example, and will at some point write an article about that as information from those files continue to come in.

I had previously looked for some kind of RSS app from our Telegram channel that we could post here so people did not have to join Telegram, because many people will not join Telegram, or any other social media site, which I fully support.

If anyone wanted to start a blog or something from our Telegram posts that can be tracked via RSS, let me know [9].
