Heading into the 2024 U.S. Presidential elections, Elon Musk used his X bully pulpit and an interview with Joe Rogan the day before the elections to state: “Vote like your life depends upon it!”
The implication was that if America did not elect Donald Trump, our lives would end, or become much worse.
I wrote on election day:
Elon Musk Wants Americans to Vote because “Your” Life Depends upon it, or “His” Life Depends on it?
Now, almost one month into the Trump 2.0 presidency, we can clearly see that it was Musk’s life that was in danger if Trump lost the election, because consumers overwhelmingly are turning away from his over-priced and over-hyped Tesla Electric Vehicles (EVs), and the main thing that has saved him since the elections is his close relationship to Donald Trump, as he is using the Trump presidency to eliminate the agencies who were investigating him, and investigating how dangerous his Teslas are on American roads.
Weaponizing Tesla Cars? Tesla Cars are Death Traps!
Still, Musk cannot go on fooling the public forever, and at some point he has to actually produce what he has been promising for a decade and a half, which is a Full Self Driving (FSD) vehicle where Tesla owners can become rich millionaires by renting out their Teslas as Robotaxis.
Even though these FSD Teslas that can allegedly be used as Robotaxis are still not available, Tesla earned over a half $billion in sales last year from its “Full Self Driving system”, which Tesla drivers across the U.S. have been led to believe will make them rich, at some point in the future.
Well, there is just one problem with selling AI hype for over 15 years now. Eventually the day will come where everyone will wake up and realize that they’ve been scammed.
That day may have just arrived last week, as the China-produced Byd electric car, which surpassed Tesla as the world’s most popular EV in sales at the end of 2023, announced that they were now going to also include their FSD feature, for free.
Byd’s cheapest EV sells for under $10,000, but you won’t find them in the United States, as it has become the world’s #1 selling EV WITHOUT being sold in the U.S. market.
Byd’s Driverless Aspirations Grasp a Big Thing—People Want Stuff That’s Free
In a call with analysts last month, General Motors CEO Mary Barra predicted a terrific flow of new revenue within five years—$2 billion a year in recurring fees from customers using its autonomous driving system, Super Cruise.
But China’s Byd may have blown a hole in Barra’s forecast. Last week, Byd CEO Wang Chuanfu said the company would offer autonomous driving capability as a standard feature in 21 vehicles in the coming months—in other words, for free, including in its $9,000 electric Seagull.
Chuanfu’s move shook a longstanding presumption of Western carmakers, including Tesla, GM, Ford and Mercedes-Benz, that autonomy would be a big future revenue driver for them. Instead, within just a few years, Chuanfu predicted, customers will expect driverless functionality much as they do “a seat belt or an airbag”—as equipment that simply comes with every car.
GM’s revenue expectations from Super Cruise reflect industrywide ambitions: Tesla recognized $596 million in revenue from its Full Self Driving system last year, and CEO Elon Musk told analysts last month that revenue from FSD and humanoid robots could eventually make Tesla “the most valuable company in the world by far.”
Tesla is building manufacturing lines for FSD and robots “for what I think will be an epic 2026 and a ridiculous ’27 and ’28,” Musk said.
In a way, Byd’s offering of standard autonomous driving follows the China playbook, which we have detailed multiple times: Since the 2000s, Chinese companies have come to dominate industry after industry by transforming the economics through government subsidies and brutal competition.
That’s how Chinese companies like Contemporary Amperex Technology Ltd. have come to make most batteries in the world. And it’s how Byd, which began making cars in 2003, has emerged as China’s biggest automaker, and last year the third largest in the world, rising from ninth place in 2023.
But Byd is also following something else—the truism that people really like free things. (Source – Subscription Needed.)
Musk’s high profile alliance with Republican Donald Trump has also angered many Tesla owners, who historically have tended to be Democrat liberals. This past weekend, they showed up to protest at Tesla showrooms all over the United States, as well as in other countries also.
This news about China’s Byd offering FSD for free, follows the recent news that China also now has a Chat AI program that rivals ChatGPT, but it is for free. China now leads the U.S. in 57 of 64 key technologies. See:
China Now Dominates the U.S. in 57 of 64 Critical Technologies as U.S. Stands on the Brink of Economic Collapse with the AI Bubble
And we can now include “biotech” and medical products as another sector where China is surpassing the U.S.
A little-known biotech company stunned the biopharmaceutical industry last spring when it declared an “unprecedented” achievement: its experimental cancer drug looked more effective than Merck’s Keytruda in a clinical trial. The company, Summit Therapeutics, licensed the drug from Chinese company Akeso Inc.
In October, a group of life science investors announced they were putting $400 million into creating a company called Kailera Therapeutics that would develop experimental obesity drugs it bought from Chinese company Jiangsu Hengrui Pharmaceuticals.
Then in a matter of days in December, Merck disclosed it would license a potential competitor to Summit’s drug and a separate experimental obesity pill – both from Chinese companies.
Suddenly, U.S. companies are racing to find medicines in China. Almost 30% of Big Pharma deals with at least $50 million up front involved Chinese companies last year, up from 20% the year before and none only five years before, according to data from DealForma.
“That’s stunning to me,” said Chen Yu, founder and managing partner at crossover fund TCGX. “That’s stunning.” (Source.)
Earlier today, China President Xi Jinping held a rare meeting with some of the biggest names in China’s technology sector.
China’s Xi holds rare meet with business leaders amid US tech rivalry
BEIJING, Feb 17 (Reuters) – President Xi Jinping held a rare meeting on Monday with some of the biggest names in China’s technology sector, such as Alibaba, opens new tab founder Jack Ma, urging them to “show their talent” and be confident in the power of China’s model and market.
The tightly choreographed pro-business rally, a turnaround in Beijing’s approach to its tech giants from a regulatory clampdown four years ago.
Xi’s move to gather business leaders, including those behind breakout successes despite U.S. pressure in recent months, underscores the importance of private-sector innovation for China to gain ground in technology, they said.
“It’s a tacit acknowledgement that the Chinese government needs private-sector firms for its tech rivalry with the United States,”
said Christopher Beddor, deputy China research director at Gavekal Dragonomics in Hong Kong.
“The government has no choice but to support them if it wants to compete with the United States.”
The private sector in China, which competes with state-owned companies, contributes more than half of tax revenue, more than 60% of economic output and 70% of tech innovation, official estimates show.
Xi’s remarks, summarised hours later by state media, stressed continuity in China’s economic development strategy. But he also said its private business had “broad prospects and great promise” to create wealth and opportunity. (Source.)
How ironic is that that here in 2025, China is moving more towards a free market based economy, encouraging more innovation to drive down prices, while the U.S. is moving more towards a monarchy by handing over many of the functions of the federal government into the hands of a few wealthy Tech Oligarchs, who want to cut programs out of the federal budget to enrich their own companies instead.
Elon Musk is continuing with his techno-prophecies and is claiming that Teslas will soon be powered by his new AI chat bot, Grok, which he will put on a show tonight to demonstrate.
Elon Musk famously claimed his cars were simply computers on wheels. However, they are proving to be advanced versions of computing devices. Tesla cars will soon be integrated with the most advanced edition of xAI’s Grok, and a live demo of the AI model is scheduled for today.
Grok 3 will bring significant improvements after xAI updated its Large Language Model (LLM) training method. The AI model has been using real-time information based on posts on the X social media platform to generate answers, enabling it to share breaking news. (Source.)
Of course, this follows a news report from last week that Fox News anchor John Roberts was forced to prove that he is still alive after Elon Musk’s Grok AI erroneously claimed he was dead. (Source.)
Like all of his previous shows on Tesla’s AI, it will probably be all smoke and mirrors tonight, with promises about how great this technology will be, in the future, as he has been promising for a decade and a half now.
Well the future is here now, and it is China.
At some point, investors on Wall Street will acknowledge this also, and we will all suffer.
Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.”
Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow.
What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.
Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.”
As it is, you boast and brag. All such boasting is evil. (James 4:13-16)
